Itinerary: 20 Night Deluxe Vacation by Private Train - Silver Class

Day 1

Arrive Moscow

Arrive in Moscow, where you will be met and transferred to the Marriott Royal Aurora Moscow (or similar) for a 2 night stay.

Settle into your accommodations and then enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel restaurant where you will have the chance to meet your fellow travelers for the first time.

Day 2

Moscow

After breakfast this morning you will be escorted on a walking tour of Moscow with a particular focus on the iconic Red Square where you'll see famous sights such as the Kremlin, St Basil's Cathedral with its colorful onion-domed spires and Lenin's Tomb. If there are other places you would rather see, you have the freedom to choose from other tours including the Tretyakov Gallery and the Museum of the KGB.

Day 3

Board the Golden Eagle

This morning, leave your hotel and transfer to the blue and gold carriages of the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express.

Settle into your private Silver Class cabin and then make your way to one of the sumptuous restaurant cars for your first dinner onboard as the train heads out of Moscow into rural Russia.

Day 4

Volgograd, Russia

Located on the banks of the Volga River, Volvograd (or Stalingrad as it was known during the Soviet era) witnessed one of the most important battles of the Second World War when the Russian army valiantly turned back the Nazi advance and changed the course of the war. You will visit the memorial complex of Mamayev Kurgan and then visit the nearby museum dedicated to this historic event.

Back onboard, enjoy dinner as the Golden Eagle heads towards the border with Kazakhstan.

Day 5

Kara Kum Desert, Kazakhstan

Today is spent enjoying the passing scenery as you travel down into the arid landscapes of the Kara Kum desert. As well as admiring the view from your window, you may also like to mix with your fellow passengers in the bar car or perhaps take your first Russian language lesson?

Day 6

Khiva, Uzbekistan

Arrive today into Urgench in Uzbekistan and disembark for a visit to the ancient city of Khiva. This UNESCO World Heritage listed city was founded 2,500 years ago and was once an important trading post along the Silk Route. A wealth of magnificent architecture rises out of the desert, surrounded by ancient city walls and you will explore mosques, minarets and bazaars in the Inner Town.

Day 7

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

This morning you will arrive in Ashgabat, brash capital city of Turkmenistan, known as the 'Las Vegas of the Kara Kum'. The towering modern buildings and golden domed palaces mark a stark contrast to the surrounding desert.

Day 8

Merv, Turkmenistan

Have an early breakfast this morning before arriving into Mary. Here you'll disembark for a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Merv which is believed to have been inhabited since the 3rd century BC. This was another important stopping point on the Silk Route and was once thought to be the largest city in the world.

Day 9

Bukhara, Uzbekistan

The area around Bukhara has been inhabited for five millennia and the city itself has existed for 2,500 years. Your tour today includes a visit to the Ark, a fortified residence of the Emirs of Bukhara who ruled here until Soviet times. You will also travel out of the city to the romantically named Palace of the Moon and Stars.

Day 10

Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Arrive this morning in Samarkand, a city founded in the 6th century BC and historically one of the most important urban areas in Asia. Your tour includes significant sites including the beautiful Bibi Khanum Mosque and the Ulag Beg Observatory, constructed in 1428. After dinner, pay a visit to the illuminated magnificent Registan Square before returning to the train.

Day 11

Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Today, you will arrive in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan where you will disembark for a city tour. Return to the Golden Eagle for lunch as you continue your journey towards Kazakhstan.

Enjoy an afternoon at leisure, relaxing in the bar car, joining a fascinating lecture about the history of this region or simply watching the changing scenery roll by.

Day 12

Almaty, Kazakhstan

You have a free morning today before arriving just before lunch into Almaty. This is the largest city in Kazakhstan and also the former capital with a name deriving from the Kazakh word for apple, thanks to the apple trees that grow in abundance outside the city limits. Your tour includes a visit to the wooden Zenkhov Cathedral in Panfilov Park.

Back onboard the Golden Eagle, enjoy a farewell banquet before retiring for your last night on this train.

Day 13

Crossing into China

The Golden Eagle arrives at the Kazahk border town of Druzhba today where you will say a final goodbye to the train that has been your home for eight days. After border crossing formalities are complete, join the Shangri-La Express at Alanshankou across the Chinese border and settle into your private compartment as your journey continues eastwards.

Enjoy a welcome dinner of authentic Chinese cuisine in the restaurant cars this evening before retiring for the night.

Day 14

Urumchi & Turpan

Arrive in Urumchi this morning and disembark for a tour including a visit to the famous mummy exhibition at the Provincial Museum. After lunch, continue to Turpan with its breathtaking backdrop of red sandstone hills known as the 'Flaming Mountains'. Take a tour of the underground irrigation system that has watered the city's orchards and vineyards for centuries.

Your last stop today is the ancient city of Jiaohe, founded in 108BC and once an important stop on the Silk Route. The area was abandoned after it was destroyed by the army of Ghengis Khan in the 13th century and is now slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding natural landscape.

Day 15

Dunhuang

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning and arrive before lunch into Dunhuang for visit to the amazing Magao Thousand Buddha Cave Complex dating back to 300AD. Inside the caves, you'll find an astounding collection of sculptures and murals depicting the evolution of Buddhist art over a thousand years.

In the afternoon, take a tour by camel into the arid beauty of the Gobi Desert and visit Crescent Lake, surrounded by high sand dunes. Here, you'll enjoy dinner and a local folk performance before returning to the train.

Day 16

Jiayuguan

This morning you will arrive at 'the first and greatest pass under heaven', so called because it is the most westerly pass at the Great Wall of China. Disembark for a tour which will take you to a preserved fortress at the end of the Great Wall which dates back to 1372.

In the afternoon, relax back on board the Shangri-La Express with the option of listening to a lecture about the Great Wall in the Bar Car.

Day 17

Xi'an

You will visit one of the great archaeological finds of the 20th century this morning when you arrive in Xi'an and see the world famous Terracotta Warriors, made up of 6,000 terracotta figures and their horses. If you prefer, you can opt for a visit to the Han Yangling Tomb and Museum, one of China's undiscovered secrets.

This evening, enjoy a traditional Tang Dynasty Dinner, Music and Dance Show.

Day 18

Beijing

There are two choices for today's tour. Head for Tiananmen Square and then explore the beautifully restored Forbidden City. Your tour continues with a visit to the Temple of Heaven where you will have the opportunity to watch traditional dancing, singing and calligraphy. The Shangri-La Express

Onboard Dining on the Golden Eagle

A particular delight of the Golden Eagle are the two restaurant cars, where the chefs serve meals using (wherever possible) local ingredients. Whether it be world-renowned "Borsch" or Omul - a fish unique to Lake Baikal, meals are complemented by wines from around the world, as well as - naturally - vodka. Yet the social heart of the train is of course the bar car, a great place to relax and settle into the unhurried pace of life on board. Unwind in comfortable surroundings, watch the world go by, and meet your fellow passengers.

Onboard Dining on the Shangri-La Express

Meals aboard the Shangri-La Express are served in the spacious restaurant car, where dedicated chefs serve a Western breakfast, followed by a wide range of authentic Chinese specialties at lunch and dinner, using only the finest local ingredients. Equally special is the unique ambience of the piano bar car, which stays open until the last person leaves. The bar is the perfect place to get to know your fellow passengers or take in the scenery.
