Itinerary: 10 Night Vacation by Rail

Day 1

London to Vienna

Leave from London’s St Pancras International station aboard the Eurostar to Belgian capital Brussels. From here transfer onto a service to Cologne where you’ll catch an overnight sleeper train to Vienna. Accommodations onboard are in an economy double compartment.

Settle into your cabin as the train heads out into rural Germany. Snacks and light refreshments are available from the cabin attendant but there is no restaurant car on this service, so we recommend eating in Cologne before you board.

Day 2

Vienna

After breakfast this morning, arrive into Vienna and check in at the Hotel Am Konzerthaus for an overnight stay.

Spend the day exploring the Austrian capital at your own pace. Perhaps visit one of the city’s historic museums or the modern art collection at the funky Kunsthaus, designed by local architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. You could also visit major sights such as the stately Schönbrunn Palace or St Stephen’s Cathedral. In the evening, why not enjoy a concert in one of the city’s many venues or take in a performance at the Spanish Riding School?

Day 3

Vienna to Budapest

This morning, leave Vienna for Budapest on a 3 hour train journey. On arrival, check in at K + K Opera Hotel for an overnight stay.

You have a free afternoon and evening to discover the attractions of Budapest. Don’t miss a visit to Buda Castle, a huge complex with many museums and a Neo-Gothic terrace called the Fisherman’s Bastion, overlooking the Danube and the ‘Pest’ half of the city. After a busy day of sightseeing, what better way to relax than to try one of Budapest’s famous spas?

Day 4

Budapest to Sighisoara

Spend another day exploring Budapest. Take a boat cruise down the river, tour the beautiful Parliament Building, home to the Hungarian Crown Jewels, or visit the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest in Europe.

In the evening, collect your baggage from the hotel front desk and head back to Keleti station for an overnight sleeper service to Sighisoara. You will be staying in a private double cabin.

Day 5

Sighisoara

Arrive into Sighisoara mid-morning and meet your transfer service which will take you to the Fronius Residence Sighisoara. Check in for an overnight stay.

Sighisoara is an atmospheric city with one of the best preserved medieval citadels still inhabited today. Wander through cobbled alleyways, secluded squares and up winding stair cases for views over towers and turrets. Don’t miss the museum of history in the landmark Clock Tower or the frescoes in the Church on the Hill.

Day 6

Sighisoara to Brasov

After another morning to explore Sighisoara, take your private transfer from your hotel back to the station and catch an afternoon service to Brasov. This is a wonderfully scenic journey, taking you through the Transylvanian Hills and the Eastern Carpathian mountains. On arrival in Brasov, pick up your transfer to the Kronwell Hotel Brasov where you will stay for 2 nights.

Settle into your hotel and then spend your first evening exploring the city.

Day 7

Dracula's Castle Tour

Today, enjoy a guided tour to Bran Castle, situated on a cliff top overlooking the surrounding forest and the distant Carpathian Mountains. Despite the fact that Vlad the Impaler never lived here, this castle is exactly as you’d imagine Dracula’s home to be, with its secret chambers and narrow corridors. On the way to Bran, you’ll also visit the 13th century Rasnov Citadel which played a major part of the Transylvanian defense and trade systems.

Days 8 and 9

Brasov to Sibiu

Spend another morning in Brasov before taking your private transfer back to the station for a journey to Sibiu. Look out for views of the distant Fagaras Mountains, Romania’s highest mountain range, on your way. On arrival in Sibiu, take a private transfer to the Hilton Sibiu and check in for a 2 night stay.

Spend two days discovering the attractions of this former European Capital of Culture. Sibiu boasts well preserved medieval architecture and a wealth of cultural activities. Take a walk through the Grand and the Lesser Squares, tell a lie on the Bridge of Lies and visit Brukenthal Museum featuring a rich collection of Romanian and international paintings.

Day 10

Sibiu to Bucharest

Transfer back to the station early this morning and board your last train service towards Romania’s capital Bucharest. You’ll cross the Southern Carpathians on a 6 hour journey full of breathtaking scenery. On arrival in Bucharest, check in for an overnight stay at the K + K Elisabeta.

Enjoy an afternoon at leisure in Bucharest. How about a visit to the Parliament Palace, the world’s second largest building, or an evening meal in the vibrant Lipscani district, dating back to the 15th century?

Day 11

Depart Bucharest

Leave Bucharest today for your onward journey. Perhaps extend your adventure with an overnight train to Istanbul or a visit to the Romanian resort of Constanta on the Black Sea?

St Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna Belvedere Palace, Vienna Parliament Building, Budapest Sighisoara Old Town, Sighisoara Brasov Casa Sfatului, Brasov Sibiu Triumphal Arch, Bucharest Parliament Palace, Bucharest

Sibiu is rich in history, charm, delicious food and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The town is divided between the Upper Town, home to most of Sibiu's historic sights, and the Lower Town, complete with cobblestone streets, corner cafés and beautiful churches. Why not visit the well-preserved Citadel of Sibiu which was one of the best fortified in Europe?

Bucharest

Bucharest

Bucharest is a charming city, blending wide, tree-lined boulevards and lovely Belle Époque buildings with modern sensibilities. Start in the historic Lipscani area which is home to many art galleries, antique shops and coffeehouses. Bucharest also has a wealth of palaces, museums, churches, parks and historical monuments.
